The location

Where the pavement stops being the point

Ute Bluff sits right on Highway 160, but the forest starts at the back fence. Walk the Ute Bluff Nature Trail from the property, wet a line in Gold Medal water, or load the sleds and go.

  • Adjacent to the Rio Grande National Forest
  • Minutes from the Rio Grande River
  • About 20 miles to Wolf Creek Ski Area
  • Two million acres of public land nearby
  • Nature trail on the property
  • Downtown South Fork just up the road

Under new ownership

Hello — I’m Johnny Shaw

I took over Ute Bluff because I believe this property is one of the best-placed spots in the San Luis Valley, and it deserves to be run like it.

We are working through the whole place unit by unit — refreshing the cabins and lodge rooms, tightening up the grounds, and getting the little things right. If something is not what you expected during your stay, come tell me at the office. I would much rather hear it from you than read it later.

Come see us. We will do our best to make your visit an easy one.

Green season

Gold Medal trout water on more than thirty miles of the Rio Grande, thirteen lakes within twenty minutes, twenty-plus hiking trails, jeep roads into the high country, rafting, horseback riding and golf at the Rio Grande Club. Then a hot tub and a porch chair.

Snow season

Wolf Creek Ski Area gets the most snow in Colorado — 1,600 acres, five lifts, fifty trails, about twenty miles up Highway 160. Add 255 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, cross-country tracks, ice fishing and ice climbing on the pass.
